I was inspired by one of the ethnographic observations, when going over them again which saw a kind of ‘moving portrait’ emerging in the story section. Inspired by Andy Warhol’s screen tests, as a way of analysing subtle facial expressions and gestures, I used AR filters in the aspect ratio of Instagram stories to create these short format videos, which became a sort of allegorical representation of the project.
It’s interesting doing it in this format like a Photo Booth, as it felt more formal and deliberate. I spoke about consciously slowing the practice down in this piece of research, which resulted in a heightened feeling of performativity. I spoke about this in my thesis and contemplated that perhaps this was due to the fact that I didn’t have to physically edit – all the editing is in-built and visually affects human faces the same.
