Yorgos Lanthimos – Dystopia.

How do filmmakers distort our world but don’t distort reality to the point where it becomes unfamiliar? This is a question that has been playing on my mind as I develop my concepts and explore how to explore the future without it being gimmicky. Yorgos Lanthimos was introduced to me by Itai in his second branding and ethics session, I love his work and have noted down some techniques to revisit.

Thought-provoking and original stories.

Distinct visual language.

His directing style constructs a visual dystopia and creates worlds that are not far out of the ordinary but strangely similar to our own – sense of familiarity.

Interesting framing. echos the strange story visually.

Use of Zoom lens.

Incredibly wide long shots. Tiny characters. Voeyeristic.

Off-beat style of dark comedy.
